Editor's note:

In 1924, Dr. Sun Yat-sen established the Whampoa Military Academy with the help of the Communist Party of China and the Soviet Union. The teachers and students of Huangpu made great achievements in the struggle against imperialism and feudalism, and in the struggle for national unity and independence, and made significant contributions to the Chinese revolution. On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the Whampoa Military Academy, China News Service launched the 100-person oral history series "The Wind Rises in Whampoa" to search for 100 representative Whampoa alumni and descendants around the world, listen to the stories of the martyrs, and pursue the spirit of the ancestors, so as to better to unite the Chinese people at home and abroad to jointly contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the complete reunification of the motherland.

He Sui was a veteran of the Revolution of 1911 and a military educator of the Republic of China. In May 1928, under the entrustment of Chiang Kai-shek, the then commander-in-chief of the National Revolutionary Army, He Sui served as the acting administrator of the Huangpu Military Academy (i.e., acting president and vice-president at the same time) to train talents for the Huangpu Department of the Northern Expedition Revolutionary Army. As the person in charge of the military academy, He Sui is one of the people who left the most inscriptions on the military academy: Sun Yat-sen's seven-character motto "Peace, Struggle, Save China" on the military academy monument, "The Beginning and End of the Eastern Expedition" at the cemetery of martyrs who died in the Eastern Expedition, and the inscription on the Northern Expedition Monument ...all from his handwriting.

The He family is full of talented people. In 1933, under the influence of He Sui, his eldest son He Shiyong was admitted to the 10th phase of the Whampoa Military Academy and began a three-year military academy career in Nanjing. After graduation, he joined the Communist Party of China and worked in the underground party for a long time. After the founding of New China, he became the first president of Guangdong and Guangxi. Director of the Salt Bureau. Since 1990, He Shiyong has served as the second council president of the Guangdong Province Huangpu Military Academy Alumni Association. He Shiyong actively promoted the reconstruction of the former site of the Huangpu Military Academy. In 1996, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen's birth, the headquarters of Huangpu Military Academy was rebuilt and completed. In the eyes of He Sui's eldest grandson, He Daining, Huangpu Military Academy carries the dreams of his grandfather He Sui and his father He Shiyong. "Our family often talks about Huangpu, from childhood to adulthood."

Over the years, He Daining has maintained contact with the descendants of Huangpu and the descendants of He Sui's old friends. He often went to the site of the Huangpu Military Academy to explore the history and wrote a book. He said, "We are writing the experiences of our ancestors into a book so that future generations can see the history of Huangpu. We hope that through the centenary activities of Huangpu, we can enhance cross-strait exchanges and make new contributions to the reunification of the two sides."
