The news comes as a shock to many Brits: King Charles III. has cancer. Buckingham Palace announced this on Monday evening. Charles apparently underwent lengthy treatment immediately after the diagnosis, but he still wanted to continue with royal business, it was said

The 75-year-old monarch receives well wishes not only from international politicians, but also from many Londoners:

»It's very sad, only a year after the coronation. My thoughts are with him, with the family. I hope they all pull themselves together and that he gets well again soon. «

»I think he's doing a wonderful job, to be honest. I'm a big fan. This is actually something a family wants to go through in private, not in public. But having been in the public eye for so long, I'm sure he knows how much it connects him to other people, to other families, who are going through something like this...”

»He will have the best doctors, he has the best chances, only age is against him. Get some rest, boy. Give up the throne, leave it to William. You will be healthy again. Let's Party hard. Enjoy Camilla.”

Many Britons admire that the King himself announced his diagnosis before it was potentially exposed by the British press. This is rather unusual for the royal family. The announcement could still have a positive effect.

Michael Holden, Royals expert Reuters:

“When he sought treatment for his enlarged prostate, he wanted it to be known because he wanted other people to get checked if they had any concerns. And his announcement led to many people searching the National Health Service website to find out more.”

At least for the moment, the family seems to be moving closer together: Even Charles' son Harry, who now lives in California, has arrived. His older brother, heir to the throne William, is also due to return to the public from Wednesday. He had actually wanted to cut back while his wife Princess Kate recovered from an operation.
