One suspect was declared unfit to stand trial. Investigators believe Mackenzie ordered his followers to starve themselves and their children to death. So they were supposed to go to heaven before the world ended. More than 400 bodies have been exhumed from a remote forest on the Kenyan coast. He had previously been charged with, among other things, torture and terrorism.

It was one of the largest mass suicides of modern times: in Kenya, followers of an apocalyptic sect starved themselves to death, apparently on Paul Mackenzie's orders. The cult leader has now denied the murder allegations in court.
