  • Why is it so difficult to find a partner after 40?: "You don't hook up in bars anymore"

Four out of ten women have never had an orgasm in their lives. I'm not saying it, the truth is that I have a few friends around me with this dilemma, the scientific journal 'Journal of Sexual Medicine' says it. An outrage that 10 years ago had a much higher percentage, until

the first clitoral sucker arrived

on the market.

At that time, many (and obviously, many) did not know the difference between clitoris or vagina. Not to mention being

'clitoral' or 'vaginal',

but then an advertisement appeared for a device very different from the typical vibrators of the time (most of them shaped like a male member), which promised to make you reach orgasm in a while. record sucking your vagina. The truth is that reviewing it, a priori it doesn't sound so good, but the results were and continue to be 10 years later, faithful to the promised advertising.

The genie of the lamp

The German Michael Lenke was the one who, after reading a news article that stated that 50% of women had problems reaching orgasm, the light bulb went on:

this could not continue happening.

So he built the technology from scratch and used his wife as the main testator.

On its tenth anniversary, the LoveHoney Group company can say that since then more than 10 million

products have been sold

worldwide and that Lenke is now happily retired. His device achieved that, in addition to breaking marriages, it also brought others much closer, because thousands and thousands of women from all over the globe finally reached their first orgasm with this sex toy.

Orgasm as an industry: supply and demand

Until then, sex shops were dark, obscene places, even seen as 'dirty', but from that first Womanizer, online stores and sales platforms for this type of toys followed, which today have even been converted into

spaces for sexual disclosure,

such as Platanomelón, Lelo, Amantis or

Satisfyer

. This last brand arrived almost four years after Womanizer and with its clitoral stimulator that was named the same as the brand, it became the

best-selling sex toy in history

, as the brand says in its communications. Not only that, but the marketing campaign was such that they got us to refer to any sucker with the name Satisfyer.

Since the first Womanizer, the supply has multiplied because the demand has increased exponentially: in 2020, the market for these toys was valued at more than 29 billion euros and by 2028, that figure is expected to reach 44 billion. According to the 'Study on the use of erotic toys 2023', carried out by the Academia Diversual,

31.4% of Spaniards use sex toys

(alone or as a couple) to achieve orgasm.

And they do it two to three times a week, followed by 28.4% who use them less than once a week. Furthermore, in that same survey it is stated that 61.3% of the people surveyed have

between two and five sex toys

and 20.3% have between six and 10.

A transformation of sexuality

But what has changed in our sexuality since the first clitoral sucker came into our lives to improve them to the point of wanting to have more than one toy on the nightstand? According to

Elisabeth Neuman,

director of product research at Lovehoney Group, several aspects influence it: "The sexual repertoire has expanded and people are invited to explore and discover it thanks to sex educators and researchers, as well as feminism and cultural pop, today a greater number of identities and options for sexual desires and behaviors are much more visible and appreciated. This does not mean that everyone should enjoy or act on all those sexual desires or behaviors, but they are

valid options to explore.

Sonia Encinas,

sexologist and author of the book 'Affective sex: Everything you need to know to enjoy conscious sex from day one', alludes to the capitalist society in which we live: "The evolution of the erotic toy market must to do more with capitalism than with sexual education. Although it is evident that, thanks to the advances of feminism, in recent years there has been a liberation of women's sexuality that has been

contagious.

Talking among ourselves is a true revolution "And that, added to the information we access through social networks - which is not always adequate, but much of it is great - has pushed women to want to have a healthier and more satisfying relationship with their sexuality."

Eye-catching toys and original designs

Another factor to take into account is the design of these devices, which has changed in every way throughout this time. Bright colors, ergonomic designs adapted to each situation or need (bunnies, ad hoc for the shower, anal, Chinese balls of different colors), as well as completely accessible prices. "The goal

is no longer to reproduce heterosexual penetration

with a sex toy, but to create a pleasurable experience that deviates from this norm, which is known to be the least successful for clitoral stimulation," says Neumann.

Anna Boldú,

CEO of Platanomelón, created her company in 2014 with the intention of escaping prejudices of this type: "We were born to create a kind of

breath of fresh air

in the world of sexuality in Spain: with friendly toys, in bright colors , unrealistic..., to generate trust and space to learn. And above all, with a professional team, with psychologists, sexologists and many other people who are experts in the fields of intimate well-being (gynecologists, pelvic floor physios, andrologists, etc.) .

Taboos continue

Turn sex into something fun, but also something natural "like playing sports, going to the movies or reading a book," as Anna points out. But the truth is that despite the figures we detail, there is still a great taboo when it comes to talking about this type of purchases. Those surveyed in the aforementioned Diversual study allude as a main reason for using these devices that their relationships become

more pleasant experiences

(67.7%), while 48.8% assure that they achieve more intense orgasms.

However, only 41.4% of Spaniards talk about this openly with our partner or friends. That is why it is so important to establish education and dissemination platforms. Platanomelón has started a campaign on social networks where it asks the RAE

to change the meaning of 'consoler':

"We are clear that giving pleasure is not consoling. Consoling is, as the word itself indicates, alleviating someone's pain or affliction. With "This meaning assumes that vibrators console the absence of a lover, and encourages compensating for it with the use of these products. Sex toys do not console but give pleasure, they make us enjoy and allow us to play and experiment."

The toy is not going to replace your partner

And when we talk about education, it must be two-way. If not, what good will it do when we put the toy away and face our sexual relationships with other people? Although it is proven that in many of them there is also room for these devices, according to Diversual: the study publishes that people who have sexual relations between 2-7 times a week in company in turn use an average of 5.84 % times a month they use erotic toys alone, a figure very similar to the 6.11% times that people who have sex with a partner less than once a week would use them, so we can say that

erotic toys do not replace sexual relations with a partner.

What do men think?

But on the male side there is still a totally archaic vision and as an example, a button. A few days ago you could see the journalist Iñaki López Roldán on open television, who showed off how unnecessary these toys were in his house and his virility, of which he seemed to have plenty. Textual:

"I will never ever be replaced by a roomba of love.

We can all have a day of it and have a laugh. Sorry, but as a good hominid with present hands, I don't need at all a substitute for six batteries of a flask, you are making mistakes. If you don't arrive, it's your problem. In my case, when I arrived, they even removed the plugs." Wow, Iñaki, the truth is that you did turn out to be a hominid.

This example serves to illustrate a thought that dominates a large part of men and that has to do, once again, with education, as sexologist Encinas points out: "The sexual revolution of men is advancing slowly, but it is about reach. For them, transforming their sexuality means letting go of a privilege: that sex is their place of experience and a need. And two things happen: either they begin the transformation because they feel discomfort when they don't fit in, or "for them it's okay." and they have to come across something that opens their eyes. For example, empathy. In general,

men are less creative in sex

because they have not "needed it" and also, due to the influence of normative masculinity, their script is much narrower. But opening up to discover other stimuli will be just as transformative and enriching as it is for women. And the toy store can be an option to explore."

In this sense, Sonia also alludes to common sense when it comes to use: "Of course, in this capitalist system, there was also going to come a time when quick pleasure sneaked into masturbation. And while I think it's fabulous "Having that resource that works for so many

is neither a miracle nor should it be salvation.

Taking care of our sexuality and our pleasure is worth taking time. And if a device saves a relationship, I would go a little deeper into the whys."

High voltage technologies

When designing the technology of these devices, many actors are involved and generally, "they are processes that last

several years

until the final product is put on sale," as Elisabeth Neumann confirms. Throughout this process, the opinions and ratings of the users themselves are taken into account.

The technologies used in each toy have varied and evolved over the years since that first Womanizer. This last brand has just released its new product, Womanizer NEXT, with which it boasts of having patented a new technology: "This is a reinvented version of the brand's patented Pleasure Air technology (PAT), which uses

changes in the pressure of the air to stimulate the clitoris.

The main difference of 3D Pleasure Air compared to normal PAT is the ability to pulse at a slower speed, as low as 3 pulses per second, offering a more natural and refined sensation for the clitoris. To accomplish this, they looked to acoustic engineering: "We took advantage of subwoofer technology to create linear movements (up and down) of the motor. This allowed for a more controlled change in pressure rate."

Platanomelón, for its part, boasts of Momba, which they define as "a unique combination of materials that allow for

great flexibility

to adapt to absolutely all bodies with the mechanisms to provide vibration and heat to the interior of the vagina."

High voltage technologies at a time where the showcase is so

varied and free

that it is difficult to choose one of them, often due to lack of knowledge, other times due to economy. In any case and as these types of websites say, we will have to continue experimenting.
