A man apparently stole a dog on a leash in Nuremberg and abused it to death. The 26-year-old is said to have beaten the Chihuahua mix until he died, the police said on Monday.

Accordingly, the owner tied his dog up in front of a Nuremberg supermarket on Saturday afternoon to go shopping. When he came out of the supermarket shortly afterwards, the animal had disappeared. According to the information, the police received a call at about the same time that a man was hitting a dog. At the scene, officers found the dead animal behind a bush.

The witness was able to give a detailed description of the perpetrator, after which he was picked up by a patrol at a subway station. The 26-year-old had fresh injuries on his hands, according to the police.

The accused remained silent during a subsequent interrogation. The officers initiated an investigation into an offense under the Animal Welfare Act, theft and damage to property. The dead dog was returned to its owner.
