The coach of the Moroccan football team, Walid Regragui, is retained in his post despite the elimination of the Atlas Lions from the African Cup of Nations, the Moroccan Football Federation announced on February 5. Walid Regragui, whose team was one of the favorites of this edition organized in Ivory Coast, after his brilliant run at the World Cup in Qatar, had once said that he would leave if he did not reach the last square.

“

I failed, it’s my failure, not that of the players

,” declared Walid Regragui after the defeat against South Africa (2-0) in the round of 16 on January 30. The technician took his team to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, an unprecedented performance for an African nation.

During the competition, he was suspended by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for an altercation with Congolese defender Chancel Mbemba at the end of the group match between Morocco and the DRC, before this decision was overturned on appeal by the Moroccan federation.

The latter indicated in a press release that it had “

renewed its confidence

” in the coach during meetings which “

took stock

” of the Moroccan team’s journey. Despite the defeat of the Atlas Lions which "

caused

disappointment  ", the Moroccan body says it wants to "

mobilize all means capable of ensuring

national team full success

” with a view to CAN 2025, which Morocco will organize, and the 2030 World Cup, of which the country will also be co-organizer.
