Cinema successes that can finally be seen online, TV classics that are getting a new season: every month we summarize which new series and films
can be seen
on Netflix and Co. as well as in the media libraries.
The streaming schedule for February:
What is currently worth it
Jodie Foster may have been able to fool her son into thinking she was a construction worker, but to the rest of the world she is a terrific actress: The 61-year-old is currently demonstrating her skills as a furiously bad-tempered investigator in the fourth season of “True Detective,” the “High Mass.” of the TV thriller, as SPIEGEL editor Oliver Kaever writes (and raves). It is a joy to be able to watch Foster, who is rare on screen, dedicate herself body and soul to this great role. While “True Detective” was previously known for its macho poetry, this season women are the driving force.
Men, meanwhile, are hailed online as sex symbols. Various scented candles and creamy cocktails pay homage to the body fluids of Jacob Elordi, handsome in “Saltburn”. A month and a half after the release of the scandalous film, the hype is still great. In addition to the actors, the 44-year-old singer Sophie-Ellis Bextor can also sing a song about it. Thanks to the film, her song “Murder on the Dancefloor” is a sudden TikTok hit – and a potential permanent catchy tune. Also in February.
Similar to “Saltburn,” the social drama “Expats” takes place in an elite parallel world. But that's it for the similarities. In 2014, a private tragedy occurred among a group of wealthy American women in Hong Kong. In six episodes, Lulu Wang (“The Farewell”) dismantles family constructs, guilt complexes and privilege. The women (including Nicole Kidman) notice little of the political events in Hong Kong. SPIEGEL editor Christian Buß calls it "powerlessness in a tropical luxury setting." The paradox of globalization - being able to live anywhere in the world without really having to come into contact with it - is sometimes taken to a cruel extreme. Great series cinema.

What we are looking forward to (in February).
In February, ARD is trying to prove how much German productions can do with an experimental series project. Five prison escapees rob a bank in “Testo”. The seven episodes of fifteen minutes each are improvised, the series creator is Kida Khodr Ramadan - "gangster actor, gangster storyteller and German-Lebanese total work of art." Ramadan became known for “4 Blocks” and “Asbestos”. In addition to himself, Stipe Erceg, Frederick Lau and rappers Veysel and Mortel improvise. However, Ramadan may have to follow the success of “Testo” from prison. Could there be a more appropriate promo?
The historical saga “Shōgun”, which is being launched as a new adaptation, is also sure to attract attention. The first film adaptation of James Clavell's bestseller ensured high TV ratings in the eighties. Now you can watch again how the English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) gets stranded in Japan in 1600, this time on Disney+. Ten episodes full of epic battles, blood and intrigue have been announced. Top-class cast included.
The same applies to the remake of »Mr. & Mrs. Smith« on Prime Video. Instead of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, the series adaptation features multi-talented Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, who hopefully bring the action spectacle into the contemporary spirit. According to the British television magazine "RadioTimes", showrunner Francesca Sloane was inspired by reality dating formats such as "Love is Blind" for her new interpretation.
Streaming tip from the archive – films for Valentine’s Day
On February 14th - which coincides with Valentine's Day - you can escape to Barbieland on Wow (Sky), stream the most successful film of the past year and question classic gender images. Should it be more romantic or more stereotypical? Don't worry, in February the streaming providers will also be increasing their contingent of tearjerkers. Anyone who longs for rom-com classics can accompany Harry and Sally (Prime Video, Joyn+) or adore Julia Roberts in “Notting Hill” (Netflix, RTL+). Two dogs in love over a plate of spaghetti are also an option (“Susi and the Tramp” is on Disney+). Meanwhile, in the arthouse corner, at the provider MUBI, the sensual love triangle “Passages” awaits, with Franz Rogowski as the narcissistic filmmaker and lover.

Emma Stone in “Poor Things”: The most exciting thing to see in the cinema in a long time By Wolfgang Höbel
Love grotesque "The Lobster": I wish I were a lobster by Carolin Weidner
Opponents of tearjerkers and romance, on the other hand, can side with Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell. In the dystopia “The Lobster,” the two end up in a hotel by the sea. Here all singles have to find a partner within 45 days, otherwise they will turn into animals. Giorgos Lanthimos (his film "Poor Things" is currently being shown in cinemas) shot the more than unconventional love story in 2015. At the time, SPIEGEL author Carolin Weidner called "The Lobster" "a parable about our society and dating culture." Just the right pinch of grotesque social satire for the day of love.
