The essentials of the day before

  • The Israeli army has dismantled the Palestinian Hamas brigade in Khan Younes, declared Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, specifying that it would now concentrate its operations on Rafah, on the border with Egypt.

  • Hamas gave a "first positive confirmation" to a proposal for a humanitarian pause in Gaza and the release of hostages, a solution also "approved" by Israel, said the Qatari mediator.

  • A source close to Hamas in Gaza, however, told AFP that there was still no consensus on the proposal and that Qatar's statement was "hasty and false".

  • US President Joe Biden has adopted an unprecedented measure aimed at sanctioning Israeli settlers accused of violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, where violence has increased on the sidelines of the war in Gaza to, according to him, reach “intolerable levels”.

  • The attack by Palestinian Hamas on October 7 against Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,163 people on the Israeli side, the majority of them civilians, men, women and children of all ages, according to a new count carried out by AFP.

Please note: the number of victims is provided by the Hamas-led Gaza Ministry of Health.

The ministry collects information provided by hospitals in the enclave and by the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The Gaza Health Ministry does not indicate how the Palestinians were killed, whether by Israeli airstrikes and/or barrages or missed Palestinian rocket attacks. It describes all victims as victims of "Israeli aggression" and also does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

During the four wars and numerous skirmishes between Israel and Hamas, United Nations agencies regularly cited Health Ministry figures in their reports. The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Palestinian Red Crescent also use these figures.

In the aftermath of previous episodes of war, the United Nations Humanitarian Office published casualty figures based on its own research into medical records. The UN figures largely agree with those of the Gaza Ministry of Health, with a few differences.
