On November 2, 2020, a fatal fall occurred in a community in Nan'an District, Chongqing. A 2-year-old sister and a 1-year-old brother died after falling from their home on the 15th floor. After investigation, the police found that the falling incident was an intentional homicide, and Zhang Bo, the father of the two young children, and his girlfriend Ye Chengchen were the suspects.
After the case occurred, the Chongqing No. 5 Intermediate People's Court sentenced Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen to death for intentional homicide and deprived them of political rights for life. After the verdict was announced, Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen appealed. On May 11, 2023, the Chongqing Higher People's Court publicly pronounced the second instance judgment on the case, ruling to reject the appeal and uphold the original judgment. The death penalty rulings on Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen were submitted to the Supreme People's Court of China for approval in accordance with the law.
Recently, the Supreme People's Court of China made a ruling in accordance with the law on the review case of defendants Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen's death penalty for intentional homicide, and approved the death penalty of Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen. On the morning of January 31, 2024, the Chongqing No. 5 Intermediate People’s Court executed Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen in compliance with the execution order issued by the Supreme People’s Court of China.
The Supreme People's Court of China held that Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen regarded Zhang Bo's biological children as an obstacle to marriage, and jointly planned to kill two children by causing an accidental fall from a height, seriously challenging the legal and moral bottom line, and the criminal motives were extremely despicable. It is particularly bad, the means are particularly cruel, the consequences and crimes are extremely serious, and should be punished in accordance with the law.
After the news of Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen's execution was announced, Chen Meilin came to Tiantai Temple to tell her children the results. She said: "When I heard the news, I was stunned. I had not received any news before. What I want to tell my children today is very simple. You can rest in peace."
