In order to eliminate long working hours for teachers, all municipal junior high schools in Fukui City are expected to, in principle, abolish extracurricular activities on holidays by the end of 2025.

School extracurricular activities are being reviewed because they lead to long working hours for teachers, and because the declining birthrate is making it difficult for schools to carry out club activities.

On the 29th, Fukui City and the city's Board of Education discussed future club activities on holidays at municipal junior high schools, and decided on a policy to abolish both athletic and cultural clubs, in principle, at the end of 2025.

However, for the 2026 school year, Saturday and Sunday activities will be allowed at each school's discretion until the final competition for third-year students is over.

Activities during subsequent holidays will be moved to the local community, such as by encouraging participation in local teams and organizations, and the necessary expenses will be covered by support measures in the future so that children from families with financial hardship can also participate in these activities. That means considering.

These policies are expected to be officially decided at the city's Board of Education meeting on the 31st.

Fukui City Superintendent Yuji Yoshikawa said, ``With the nationwide movement to separate extracurricular activities from schools, it is important to develop activities that are not tied to schools in the community and to expand children's free activities.'' '' he said.

In Fukui Prefecture, Ono City and Awara City are moving to review club activities during school holidays, including moving them to local areas.
