"I prefer flowers such as red plums that are cold-resistant, brightly colored, and can be grown anywhere. My daughter prefers roses and tulips. Every year during the Chinese New Year, our family buys some flowers to decorate our home, which is more festive." Yang Yang, a citizen of Hangzhou, said , taking advantage of the good weather on the weekend and the children going home for the holidays, the family came here specially to buy flowers to welcome the New Year.

The reporter noticed that most of the New Year flowers with high sales on the market are Phalaenopsis, North American holly, plum blossoms, anthurium, kumquat, etc.

Mr. Jin, a fresh-cut flower merchant, said that the flower market is expected to be busiest in four or five days, when more customers will choose New Year’s Eve flowers with a shorter shelf life to preserve the most beautiful flowers during the Chinese New Year.

It is worth noting that this year’s Western Valentine’s Day falls on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year. In order to sprint for the "Double Festival" sales, Mr. Jin and his family chose to stay in Hangzhou and not go home for the New Year.

"My hometown is in Yiwu, and it is very convenient to go back during the week. The entire market is closed during the Spring Festival. We plan to go home before the end of the year and continue to open for business during the New Year." Mr. Jin said. During the visit, the reporter learned that many businesses selling flower packaging materials also have this intention.

But Mr. Yu, a potted plant merchant from Jiangxi, said that compared to flowers, Valentine's Day is not closely related to potted plants. "I plan to go home two days before New Year's Eve and reunite with my family early," Mr. Yu said. (over)
