At the time of the atomic bombing, Hiroshima University applied to Hiroshima City to list the names of 17 people who had been exposed to the atomic bomb while studying at their predecessor school from China and Southeast Asia, and who subsequently died. This is the first time that Hiroshima University has applied to have the names of international students who died in the atomic bombing included in its list.

According to a press conference held by Hiroshima University, at the time of the atomic bombing, 20 students from China and Southeast Asia were believed to have been exposed to the atomic bomb at the former Hiroshima University of Literature and Science and Hiroshima Higher Normal School.

The university applied to Hiroshima City on January 17 to have their names listed on the "List of Atomic Bomb Victims" to be placed at the cenotaph on the day of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, stating that 1 of them had been confirmed to have died as a result of investigating the circumstances and whereabouts at the time.

This is the first time Hiroshima University has applied to have the names of international students who died in the atomic bombing on its list, and the city is in the process of checking to see if any of the 17 students already have names on the list.

The names of the international students will be included in the roster as early as next month, and they are expected to be placed at the Cenotaph for the Atomic Bomb Victims at the Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 8.

At the press conference, Hiroshima University President Mitsuo Ochi said, "I would like to reconfirm the fact that those who studied at Hiroshima University were exposed to the atomic bomb and pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives."
