The fire brigade continued its operation against the forest fire on a former military training area near Jüterbog on Sunday: "Fire engines ensure that extinguishing is carried out at critical points," said the head of the Jüterbog public order office, Christiane Lindner-Klopsch, on Sunday morning. Investigations into the camp were still underway. Drones will continue to provide support from the air in surveying the area.

There has been a fire on the former military training area in Brandenburg since Wednesday evening. Its operation is difficult because the area is contaminated with old ammunition.

Smoke blanket continues to grow

As a result, firefighters cannot get close enough to the sources of the fire. "This will continue for days," said city fire chief and head of operations Rico Valentin. The fire continues to spread, and smoke development is also increasing.

"The fire is too far away to reach anything with our water cannons," Valentin said. On two flanks, however, the fire could be stopped. Strips of land had been irrigated.

In addition, the Jüterbog fire brigade is also busy on Sunday with extinguishing work due to another forest fire in the Zinna forest. Around four hectares were specifically attacked by the fire, said city fire chief Valentin. He suspects arson. From a bicycle path, it had burned left and right again and again, Valentin described.

150-hectare site

The total threatened area is given as 150 hectares. However, parts of this area are not affected, and there are not open flames everywhere, Lindner-Klopsch described.

Airplanes, helicopters or firefighting tanks are currently not requested. The situation is dynamic, and that could change, said Lindner-Klopsch. The number of firefighters deployed on Sunday so far was "under 50". They continue to work under high pressure.
