After honoring great Ibero-American idols such as Shakira, Alejandro Sanz, Marc Anthony, Julio Iglesias, Ricky Martin and Gloria Estefan, the Latin Recording Academy – the organization in charge of the Latin Grammys – will award its Person of the Year award, for the first time, to an Italian artist. This is Laura Pausini (Faenza, 1974). The person responsible for successes such as La soledad, Entre tú y mil mares and En cambio no.

Laura Pausini began her career in 1993 and, during her 30-year career, has sold more than 70 million records. The artist has also achieved various achievements in other areas. For example, she has been recognized with the Starlite Humanitarian Award and a Global Gift Award, as well as being named Person of the Year by Diversity Media, spokesperson for the Italian League against AIDS and Goodwill Ambassador of the UN World Food Programme.

In 2021, Pausini won a Golden Globe, in the category "Best Original Song", for Io Sì. The song he wrote, along with Diane Warren, for the film The Life Ahead, which also earned him an Oscar nomination. As a result, Pausini began to develop a cinematographic idea and, in 2022, released Un Placer Conocerte. A film, produced by Amazon, where she imagines what her life would be like if she were not famous.

According to the Academy, Pausini has enough merit to receive the award – which will be awarded in November, in Seville – and will be recognized for her "30-year career as a multifaceted and multilingual, as well as for her continuous commitment to social justice causes, which are close to her heart", including the fight for LGTBI rights, equality for women and the eradication of hunger.

"Laura Pausini is one of the most talented and beloved artists of her generation, whose commitment to great causes is exemplary. Throughout her more than three-decade career, her extraordinary voice continues to break barriers across languages and genres, captivating audiences around the world," said Manuel Abud, the Academy's CEO, in unveiling the news on Wednesday.

Likewise, the organization has informed that the interpreter will be honored during the week of the Latin Grammy, "in a special gala, full of renowned stars, with an emotional tribute concert, which will include versions of her famous repertoire." A recital that will be performed by a wide "range of noble artists and friends", whose names have not yet transcended.

After receiving the news, Pausini said she felt very grateful for the honor and for the affection received. "You have made a dream born in a village in Italy become a beautiful reality. Although my music has taken me to places I never dreamed I would arrive...", he said, and then referred to his repertoire in Spanish. "Spanish has opened doors for me, made me feel at home and inspired me to live music without limits," he said.

On the other hand, Pausini also wanted to record a video for her fans, in which -moved- she points out how excited she feels to become the Person of the Year for the Latin Grammys. "Receiving the news that the Academy has chosen me as Person of the Year 2023 is something that fills me with pride. And receiving it, just when I am celebrating 30 years of career, gives it a very great and significant value in my life and in that of each of the people who have accompanied me, "he explained in front of a camera.

"Saying 30 years on stage is very easy, the difficult thing is to take it. We all know that this industry is very beautiful, but it also requires a lot of strength, many sacrifices, love for what you do and courage to stay in it. And I feel very fortunate to still be here, that my family has not let go of my hand, that the whole audience has embraced me and that my colleagues have embraced me and treated me with love. Thank you all for giving me this giant, unique, magical and wonderful illusion... As life is," he said.
