The former First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn Carter, is suffering from dementia. The wife of former President Jimmy Carter "continues to live happily at home with her husband" and is enjoying spring in her hometown of Plains, the foundation established by the Carters said.

It is hoped that the news of the 95-year-old's illness will lead to dementia and mental health being discussed even more in families and doctors' offices. Rosalynn Carter has spent long stretches of her life advocating for mental health and better access to care.

Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter had married in 1946 – the couple has four children. The former first lady was a strong advocate for social issues and wrote several books. She is said to have had significant influence on White House politics during her husband's presidency.

Palliative care in the family circle

The Democratic politician from the state of Georgia in the south of the USA was US president from 1977 to 1981, when he was replaced by Republican Ronald Reagan. He is the oldest surviving former president.

98-year-old Jimmy Carter has been in palliative care at home surrounded by his family since mid-February. Carter had made public in 2015 that he was suffering from liver cancer. In addition, melanomas had been discovered in his brain. He later announced that he had overcome the disease. In February, U.S. media reported that his condition had worsened.
