German carmakers BMW and VW came in third and fourth place in the overall ranking of three categories of market dominance, technological performance and strategic vision, according to the "Global Automaker Rating 2022" report published on Wednesday. In the ranking, the Washington-based organization used ten specially created criteria to assess how successful the world's 20 largest automobile manufacturers are in the transition to zero-emission vehicles.

According to the ICCT, the report is based, among other things, on a database on the sales of electric cars and their main specifications of the markets in China, the United States, the European Union, Japan, India and the Republic of Korea in 2022. The 20 manufacturers accounted for 89 percent of sales in these six markets and 65 percent of global sales, it said.

BMW in 3rd place as the best European group

BMW finished third in the overall standings with 56 out of 100 points as the best European group. Shortly thereafter, VW followed in fourth place with 53 points. The front-runner was the electric car manufacturer Tesla with a clear lead with 83 points, followed by the Chinese car manufacturer BYD with 73 points.

On the other hand, the Japanese company Toyota was far behind its competitors in 30th place with 15 points, with Suzuki bringing up the rear.

With regard to the diesel scandal at Volkswagen in 2015, the ICCT praised the company's rapid progress. "Considering that the Dieselgate scandal was only seven years ago, it is remarkable to see how VW is emerging as a serious frontrunner in the transition to 100 percent zero-emission vehicles," Rachel Muncrief, executive director of the ICCT, said in a statement. Together with U.S. environmental authorities, the alliance had made a decisive contribution to the diesel affair first coming to light in the United States in the fall of 2015.

The number of zero-emission cars must rise sharply

Despite the development in the electromobility transition, every manufacturer still has a lot of work to do, the ICCT emphasized. Although Tesla is ahead in terms of charging speed and range, it needs to offer more models in all size classes. In addition, only half of the car manufacturers sold at least one in ten cars in 2022 were emission-free.

However, in order to limit global warming to below two degrees Celsius in accordance with the Paris climate targets, the share of sales of zero-emission cars and vans would have to be 2030 percent by 77, according to ICCT estimates. Additional measures are needed to limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees. The international community has committed itself to this goal at past climate conferences in order to avert the worst consequences of climate change.
