In a Wiesbaden indoor swimming pool, a boy was killed in a swimming lesson. According to the police, the accident occurred in mid-May, but the student was resuscitated and was initially in a coma. After a few days, the boy finally died.

According to a report in the »Wiesbadener Kurier«, it was a 14-year-old who was a member of a swimming club and was considered a good swimmer. However, he is said to have suffered from an illness. Now the police are investigating whether the accompanying teachers have violated their duty of supervision.

Pilot project to save drowning people

The »Wiesbadener Kurier« quotes the head of the swimming pool operation where the accident happened. According to the report, the incident took place in a training hall where only schools and clubs offer swimming lessons that provide the supervision themselves. After the accident, however, the lifeguards would have assisted in resuscitation.

Particularly tragic: A model project has been running in Wiesbaden since 2020 to prevent such incidents. Sensors and cameras in the swimming pool are to use artificial intelligence to rescue a possible drowning person by detecting unnatural movement patterns and sounding the alarm. However, according to the »Wiesbadener Kurier«, the pool in the training hall has not yet been equipped with the appropriate technology, in contrast to the public swimming pool.
