A flooded street in southeastern Spain. The sloping main road in the village of Molina de Segura had turned into a raging torrent last Thursday after heavy rainfall. An eyewitness wants to document this. Coincidentally, he is also filming a daring driving maneuver. The young driver of this red BMW had apparently thought that he could make it across the road with enough momentum. What follows is a lesson in the force of nature.

In other parts of the country, too, many car owners had little to laugh about. And not only those. For days, unusually heavy rainfall has been flooding entire regions in Spain. The record: 130 litres per square metre. At the airport in Madrid, a heavy rain and hailstorm flooded the tarmac.

The extreme rainfall follows the heaviest spring drought in Spain since records began in 1961. The parched soils cannot absorb the water.

By the way, the driver in Molina de Segura was lucky in the end. According to Spanish media reports, he was able to reverse into an alley and escape the water.
