A skyscraper is on fire, a boy is distraught, his mother is fighting for justice: The Japanese film »Monster« was awarded the »Queer Palm« as the best film on LGBTQ topics at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday evening.

The social thriller by director Hirokazu Kore-eda, which is also in the official competition, begins like a drama about bullying at school, told from several perspectives. The plot develops into a close friendship and love affair between two teenagers and is filmed with great delicacy.

The »Queer Palm« film prize has been awarded since 2010 and honours a short or feature film that deals with LGBTQ or feminist issues every year. In 2022, the Pakistani feature film »Joyland« won an award.

The Cannes International Film Festival comes to an end on Saturday evening with the presentation of the Palme d'Or for Best Film. 21 films will compete for the main prize at the 76th Côte d'Azur Festival.

After his success in 1984 with »Paris, Texas«, the veteran German director Wim Wenders can also hope for another Palme d'Or. He entered the competition with the film »Perfect Days« about a subtle Japanese cleaner.

The German actress Sandra Hüller has a chance to win the award for best actress. She appeared in two leading roles in the competition: as the Nazi wife in Jonathan Glazer's »The Zone of Interest« and as a suspected spousal murderer in »Anatomy of a Fall« by Justine Triet.
