Firefighters near the scene of the fire: dense clouds of smoke in the sky

A huge fire broke out in a multi-storey building in the centre of the Australian metropolis of Sydney. The fire raged in Elizabeth Street near Central Station in the Surry Hills district, as the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported, citing the police.

According to 9News, more than 50 people were evacuated from the building. Dense clouds of black smoke could be seen in the afternoon almost throughout the city, it was said. A large contingent of the fire brigade and other rescue workers were in action. Numerous roads in the area were closed.
