"Oh, this is bad" Urine leakage in teens and 10s Don't worry about it alone May 20 at 1:5

"I couldn't stop it when I bent over, or when I leaked urine, I thought, 'Oh, this is bad,'"

said comedian Kazuko Kurosawa, 44, of Mori Sannaka. It is said that one in three to four women over the age of 40 experiences "urine leakage." It has become clear that teenagers and 3-somethings who have not experienced childbirth also suffer from symptoms. (Sports News Department Reporter Yuri Numata)

"By the time I want to go to the bathroom, it's too late."

One person who has been suffering from urine leakage for many years is comedian Kazuko Kurosawa of Mori Sannaka.

Mr. Kurosawa also feels that his symptoms are progressing year by year.
I expressed my anxiety.

Mr. Kurosawa: "You can't stop it when you bend over, and when you leak urine, you think, 'Oh, this is bad.
' It's like I can't stand it anymore than I used to, or these days, as soon as I open the front door, I can't stop with peace of mind. By the time you want to go to the bathroom, it's too late."

One thing you can't let go of "for peace of mind" is a special urine leakage pad.

He wants to improve his symptoms somehow, but he says that he is not making much progress.

Ms
. Kurosawa: "I'm over 40 years old and I'm worried about the future. I think we need to change it a little bit."

Less than 20% of people in their 6s have experienced it, more than 2 in 1 women!

"Urine leakage" is said to be experienced by one in three to four people over the age of 40.

It is said to be due to aging and childbirth, but it has been found that there are many cases of urine leakage even in their 3s.

This is the result of a fact-finding survey conducted by a major daily necessities manufacturer in 20 targeting 60,4 Japan women in their 2019s to 20s.

57.1% of those in their 30s answered that they had experienced urine leakage. 64.4% of people in their 6s also experienced it, and it is around 20% of all generations.

Regardless of age, you can see that the symptoms are occurring. In addition, more than 6% of those in their <>s who experienced urine leakage did not experience childbirth.

We asked Dr. Masayoshi Nomura, director (specialist) of Kameda Medical Center's Urogyne Women's Voiding Function Center, about the results.

Dr. Nomura: It is a very surprising result that more than half of people in their 20s and 30s have experienced urine leakage, and that around 60% of all generations up to their 6s have experienced urine leakage.
Over the past 30 years, the number of outpatients related to urine leakage in women has increased dramatically. Originally, urology was known to treat prostate enlargement and prostate cancer in men with aging as a risk factor, so women rarely came to see them. In 2001, a new disease concept called "overactive bladder" was proposed that emphasizes urinary urgency, and when specific symptoms became known in the media, women who came to our hospital came to our clinic who thought of these symptoms. The fact that the number of working women has begun to increase may also be a factor in the increase in the number of people who want to receive medical treatment economically and socially. In addition, with the spread of the Internet and the advent of SNS, information on the mechanism and causes of urine leakage in women gradually spread throughout the world, and I believe that female urine leakage has become apparent, leading to a dramatic increase in the number of outpatients."

Even in your teens!? "I thought I had my period..."

As we conducted further interviews, we learned that there are cases of leakage of urine from teenagers. The person who agreed to be interviewed was trampoline Yuna Sato (10).

When he was 15 years old, he was struck by an unexpected sensation during practice.

"Did you get your period?"

I checked in the bathroom, and I wondered because my underwear was wet even though there was no menstrual blood. After that, the same thing happened frequently and he became aware of the leakage of urine.

When do symptoms appear during practice or competition? That anxiety sometimes disrupted my concentration and made me feel unsafe.

Sato
: "Trampoline puts a lot of effort on the stomach when the jump sinks, but you never know when the symptoms will come.

At the time, Sato wore a seat to deal with it, but when he wore a leotard in competition, he was always worried that it would come off.

And "Is my body okay?" I started to feel anxious.

Even so, he couldn't talk to anyone at the time.

Sato
: "I didn't know who to tell them, and I was wondering if I should ask the players around me. I was worried about whether my body would be okay."

Leaders are also confused

Some instructors are confused about how to respond to students who show symptoms. This is Ryoko Inoue, who has been coaching at a powerful trampoline club in Yao City, Osaka for many years.

During practice, he sometimes witnessed his leotard getting wet. I am worried about how to improve the situation and alleviate my students' concerns.

Ryoko Inoue
: "I'm always like, 'What's going on?' from this side, and I ask them a little bit, but it's hard for them to say it honestly. When I hear it, I look embarrassed.
For a child who doesn't have any symptoms, it's like, 'Huh?' As a coach, isn't there a lack of muscle strength? I wonder if it's hard to say.
I want you to have fun competing when you're with everyone. Because it is a symptom that is difficult to describe, I want everyone to know that symptoms of urine leakage can occur even in teenagers. If we can understand the cause and countermeasures, we will be able to respond to the problem and the person and their family, and I think it will be easier for those around us to support them."

Why teens and twenties? The key is the pelvic floor muscles

Why do symptoms appear in teens and twenties?

In the first place, women have a urethra that is about 10 cm shorter than men, and it is said that they leak urine more often. The key is the pelvic floor muscles, which are the muscles that support the bladder near the pelvis and the uterus.

It is the basis for properly tightening the urethra.

It is said that if this weakens due to aging or childbirth, urine leakage is likely to occur.

However, even in your teens and twenties, when you apply strong abdominal pressure on a daily basis such as jumping or running, your pelvic floor muscles are damaged and weakened, causing symptoms.

Don't worry alone

In a face-to-face survey conducted by the Center for Women in Sport at Juntendo University in 400 targeting approximately 23 female athletes (average age 08.2019 years old), an average of 24.8% of respondents answered that they had experienced urine leakage while playing sports.

Of these, nearly half say they feel their performance is declining.

Dr. Mari Kitade, an outpatient clinic for female athletes at Juntendo University, is visited by many athletes in athletics, rhythmic gymnastics, and ball games, but few of them complain of urine leakage symptoms at first.

Dr. Kitade: "I was impressed by the fact that there are many people who come because they have strong amenorrhea or dysmenorrhea, but when I listened closely, they were suffering from urine leakage without being able to tell anyone.

And I urge you not to hold it alone, but to consult with those around you.

Dr. Kitade: "About 9% of female athletes are embarrassed to say that they do not consult their coaches, so I think it is important to create an environment where they can talk a little more frankly.

How to improve urine leakage?

What should I do if I have symptoms of urine leakage?

We asked Hitomi Handa, a physical therapist who is familiar with the symptoms, to tell us. Here are some gymnastics exercises that you can easily do in between household chores and work.

On

all fours ▽ First, you will be in a four-sided position with your elbows. At that time, be conscious of keeping your back straight so as not to turn your hips away.

Then slowly bring your buttocks closer to your heels. As you inhale, move forward as you exhale closer to your heels.

As you exhale, the point is to tighten your butt hole when moving forward.

▽ Next

is gymnastics that can be done in a standing position. Keep your pelvis in the middle position to avoid swerving or falling over.

Keeping your pelvis straight, repeat the squat-like movement of lowering your buttocks down and back up. At this time, as you inhale, lower your buttocks and exhale, tighten your butt hole and go up.

When I asked Mr. Handa about the key points, he taught me that the important thing is to breathe correctly.

Ms
. Handa: The basis of breathing is nasal breathing, and the ideal breathing is that the diaphragm moves up and down correctly as you inhale and exhale. By nasal breathing, if you firmly raise and lower the diaphragm, which is one of the inner units, you can move the muscles of other inner units, such as the pelvic floor muscles, at the same time.

Please continue to do it 1 times a day, 1 times in the morning and 50 times before going to bed at night, and twice in the morning and evening, according to your lifestyle pattern."

Good to know

When he had symptoms of urine leakage as a teenager, trampoline player Sato was worried because he didn't know what had happened to his body. Hoping to provide hints to others who have similar problems, he shared his own experience and said, "It's important to know."

Sato
: There is a big difference between knowing and not knowing, and I think the same is true for menstrual pain, but there are individual differences in symptoms, and I think it will be easier to consult with them if they understand that they have such symptoms in the first place. And I think it would be good to have an environment where people can be close to me."
