The Blues have acted to add 12 months to the midfielder's current contract before the deadline," the Everton club said in a statement.

Currently 17th and first non-relegable before the final day, the other Liverpool club will be assured of maintaining if they beat Bournemouth, 15th and already assured of staying in the Premier League, at Goodison Park on Sunday 28 May. In the event of a draw or a fortiori defeat, he would be at the mercy of a victory of Leicester or Leeds, respectively 18th and 19th with two points, who receive respectively West Ham and Tottenham.

Arrived at the club in September 2020

If Everton is in a strong position before this last day, it owes a lot to the 30-year-old former Rennes, who arrived at the club in September 2020 from Watford, who had just been relegated. Everton was then a very ambitious club led by Carlo Ancelotti and who had also recruited Colombian James Rodriguez and Brazilian Allan to form a formidable trio in midfield.

But after the departure of the Italian to Real Madrid, the results deteriorated significantly under Rafael Benitez and Frank Lampard, sacked at the end of January to be replaced by Sean Dyche. Since the arrival of Dyche, Doucouré - who has 2 caps for Mali after being a French international in all youth categories - has become decisive again.

Scorer against Nottingham Forest (2-2), decisive assist against Brentford (1-0), then scorer and assist against Chelsea in March (2-2), he helped his club to take five points from these three games and he also scored a double in a 5-1 victory at Brighton earlier this month. After four seasons at Watford, Abdoulaye Doucouré signed for Everton for 25 million euros. As soon as he signed for Watford, he was loaned directly to Spain.
