Ray Stevenson, the Irish actor who played the "RRR" villain, an Asgardian warrior in the Thor movies and a member of the 13th Legion in the HBO series "Roma," has died. He was 58.

Stevenson's representatives told The Associated Press that the actor died Sunday, but offered no further details.

Stevenson was born in Lisburn in 1964. After attending Bristol Old Vic theatre school and working for years in British television, he made his film debut in Paul Greengrass' 1998 film Strange Request. In 2004, he appeared in Antoine Fuqua's King Arthur as a Knight of the Round Table, and several years later starred in the Marvel adaptation Punisher: War Zone.

Aside from the first three "Thor" films, in which he played Volstagg, one of Thor's warrior friends, his other notable film roles include the Divergent trilogy, G.I. Joe: Revenge and Transporter Legacy.

On the small screen, he was Titus Pullo in the series Roma, the role that really boosted his career in America at age 44. He also played Blackbeard in the Starz series Black Sails and Commander Jack Swinburne in the German television series Das Boot.

Stevenson also starred in "Star Wars Rebels" and "The Clone Wars," as Gar Saxon, and in the Star Wars action series "Ahsoka."

In an interview with Backstage in 2020, Stevenson said his acting idols were "the likes of Lee Marvin or Gene Hackman."

"They never had a bad performance, and they were brave and fearless," Stevenson said. "They were never the young, attractive protagonist; They were men I could relate to."
