"My married life is over there now, in the bin"

The wedding album of Raffaela Zanni and Maurizio Cola from Cesena in northern Italy is completely soaked. Her husband describes the moment when the floods hit her house.

Maurizio Cola, resident

"The water came up through the shower. I slept, she woke me up and we were able to escape. Within a few minutes everything was full, that was around 4:30, maybe 5:00 in the morning."

The two have been married since 1991. When the Savio River burst its banks after torrential rains on Wednesday, they had to flee their home from the floodwaters. Their memories were washed away.

Maurizio Cola, resident

"We had to throw everything away, we couldn't save anything. The water reached all the way here. The bed was completely under water."

Immediately on the morning after the flooding, Raffaella and Maurizio try to remove the mud and dispose of their destroyed belongings.
