The new films of Wim Wenders, Ken Loach, Wes Anderson, Catherine Breillat and Kore-Eda will be among the films in competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, announced Thursday, April 13, the general delegate Thierry Frémaux, unveiling a selection mixing veterans of the 7th art and newcomers.

A total of 19 films were selected, which could be joined by a twentieth, Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon", with its favorite actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert de Niro.

This film is currently planned out of competition but the festival would like to see it compete for the Palme d'Or: "the request has been made" to producers Paramount and Apple TV, "the main thing is that we have an answer before the festival begins," said Thierry Frémaux.

Of the 19 films in the running for the Palme d'Or, six are signed by female directors, including Italian Alice Rohrwacher and a newcomer, Senegalese Ramata-Toulaye Sy, who is presenting her first film.

Six female directors in competition, a record

"Six female directors in competition, it's an unprecedented number," Thierry Frémaux confirmed after the press conference to journalists. The Festival will also open with another film by a director, "Jeanne du Barry" by the French Maïwenn, which marks the great return of Johnny Depp.

Many filmmakers already palmed will make their return to competition, including the British Ken Loach, the Turkish Nuri Bilge Ceylan or the Italian Nanni Moretti, and the jury will be chaired by a filmmaker also already palmed: the Swedish Ruben Ostlund, rewarded last year with "Without filter".

The competition "mixes young filmmakers who rarely or for the first time [to Cannes] with veterans whose name, work and work are known. In terms of art, there is no expiry date for filmmakers or works," said Thierry Frémaux.

The official selection, which includes films in and out of competition, presented at Un Certain Regard or special screenings, is strong of films from the United States and Italy, he said, with in the parallel sections a film from Mongolia – a first in the history of the festival – and a "strong presence" from the African continent.

Among the expected highlights of this 76th edition: the presentation of the 5th part of Indiana Jones, with a planned tribute to its actor Harrison Ford.
