The details of the internal investigation of the Civil Guard around the Barracks case, the plot of the alleged ghost works in barracks of 13 commanders of the Civil Guard, reveal the lack of control of the management of Fernando Grande-Marlaska in the Ministry of the Interior. As we revealed today, in 2016 Lieutenant General Pedro Vázquez Jarava – the alleged director of the network – gave businessman Ángel Ramón Tejera de León, alias Mon, 80 contracts worth 1.3 million. Most of these works "were not executed or were poorly executed," according to the Internal Affairs Service of the Armed Institute. From the statements of the different chiefs of the affected barracks it can be inferred that the company is not careful to keep the forms, with work so deficient that it led those responsible for the barracks to alert their superiors.

This scandal exposes the abandonment of responsibilities on the part of María Gámez. The former director of the Civil Guard, who resigned on March 22 after her husband was charged in a corruption case, was responsible for supervising the works and, therefore, for avoiding the commission of irregularities. In this context, the delay of Interior around the investigation of this case becomes even more inexplicable. EL MUNDO revealed that this Ministry, between January and November 2022, ignored up to three requests from the judge, to appoint an expert, forcing the magistrate to resort to the Treasury. This delay has only hindered the judicial investigation.

On the other hand, it should be remembered that the works were tendered to a builder linked to the Mediator case, the plot hatched around the former socialist deputy Juan Bernardo Fuentes Curbelo, known as Tito Berni. Marlaska himself has been incapable, despite repeated requests from the opposition, of clarifying the actions being carried out by the Ministry to clarify a plot that contributes to institutional deterioration.

The Minister of the Interior is in an untenable position. To the sentence of the Supreme Court that annuls the dismissal of Colonel Diego Pérez de los Cobos is added the policy of cessions to Bildu -parliamentary partner of the Government- in the approach of ETA prisoners to the prisons of the Basque Country. With this succession of scandals, it is incomprehensible that Marlaska is still in his post. In any case, it is unacceptable that the head of Interior attacks this newspaper for revealing information that tightens the siege on its chaotic management or that the PSOE has stopped up to 93 requests for appearance of senior officials of Interior in the Senate. In addition to assuming his responsibility, Marlaska should focus on showing maximum cooperation with the Justice.
