Jeremy Renner has sat down with anchor Diane Sawyer on US television channel ABC to talk in a one-hour programme about the accident that cost him his life on New Year's Day.

Renner was out plowing outside his home in Nevada with his piste machine, a so-called snow weasel, when the accident occurred.

The "Avengers" star was supposed to help his niece who was stuck in the snow when he got the machine over him. He says he remembers everything from the time of the accident.

"I was awake the whole time," he says in a trailer for the show, which airs in the U.S. on April 6.

In the program, recordings from the alarm call are heard and relatives are also interviewed.

"I saw him clearly, in a pool of blood coming from his head. I ran up to him, I didn't think he was alive," the niece said.

New TV series coming April 11

Renner broke eight ribs in 14 places, had fractures in his knee, ankle, fibula, jaw, eye socket and shoulder, among others. One of the damaged ribs penetrated the liver.

"I wondered what my body would look like. I would just be a head and a backbone – a research experiment," Renner said.

Renner's rehabilitation seems to be going well, and he himself has posted clips on social media where he has been able to walk on treadmills with relief from machines.

Renner is set to make his first public appearance after the accident in conjunction with the premiere of his television series "Rennervations" in Los Angeles on April 11.
