Adnan Syed was released last September after spending more than two decades in prison for murder. But the court in the state of Maryland now believes that the murder victim's relatives were not given enough time to be present and speak at the court hearing last fall.

Therefore, Adnan Syed's sentence was restored and the hearing must be rescheduled, the court ruled. However, Syed may be at large until then.

Adnan Syed was sentenced as a 19-year-old to life in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend and classmate Hae Min Lee in 2000, but has always maintained his innocence. The case gained widespread attention in 2014 when the first season of the crime podcast "Serial" questioned some of the evidence prosecutors had used, claiming that Syed's then-lawyer failed to call an important witness who could have given him an alibi.
