Maria Groop Russel has been CEO of Dramaten since 2019, but is now leaving the national stage for a new assignment.

"I am happy and honored by the trust and the mission and feel very motivated. Skansen is a unique and vibrant place with great importance for many," she says in a press release.

Will take office in 2024

Maria Groop Russel will take office on 1 January 2024, succeeding John Brattmyhr, who will leave his position on 31 August, but will continue as senior advisor until the end of the year. Brattmyhr has been Skansen manager since 2005 and announced in September 2022 that he wanted to leave his post.

Maria Groop Russel will remain at the Royal Dramatic Theatre until the beginning of September before taking over as the twelfth director of Skansen since Artur Hazelius founded the open-air museum on Djurgården in Stockholm in 1891.

Since 2020, Dramaten has a shared leadership with a CEO and a theater manager and artistic director who is currently Mattias Andersson. His appointment was recently extended until 2027.
