A UN Security Council delegation has called for negotiations to end the growing violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, wrapping up a three-day visit to the country.

Eastern DRC, bordering Rwanda in particular, has been plagued by an outbreak of violence since the M23 militia took up arms again at the end of 2021, and seized entire swaths of the territory. 

UN judges on Friday suspended the trial of Félicien Kabuga, alleged financier of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, arrested in France in May 2020 after 22 years on the run.

According to medical experts, the accused is no longer able to attend the trial and is even suffering from dementia.

The court has given itself until the end of March to decide whether Kabuga should remain on the bench.

The suspension of the trial has triggered strong reactions in Kigali, the Rwandan capital, where survivors await a verdict.

In Guinea the dialogue between the military in power and the biggest political parties is still at a standstill.
