Japanese Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kenzaburo Oé,

a progressive icon who challenged the conformism of modern society,

has died at the age of 88, Kodansha publishing house reported Monday.

"He died of old age in the early hours of March 3," the publisher said in a statement.

He indicated that his family already held the funeral.

Known for his

pacifist and anti-nuke stance

, Oé was part of a generation of writers "deeply wounded" by World War II, "but full of hope for a revival".

Born in 1935, Oé grew up in a forested valley on the western Japanese island of Shikoku, a remote location he often evoked in his writings as a microcosm of humanity.
