The

European Center for Disease Control and Prevention

(ECDC) warns in its latest bulletin of the appearance of at least 14 cases of botulism in patients who traveled to Turkey at the end of February to undergo cosmetic treatment.

Apparently, they have developed the disease after the

injection of botulinum toxin

into their digestive system, an operation that is carried out to lose weight.

Specifically, 12 cases of botulism have been detected in Germany, one in Austria and another in Switzerland.

Apparently all the patients received treatment at the same

Istanbul

clinic .

There are cases in which botulism has manifested itself mildly and others in which it has done so more seriously.

In fact, according to the ECDC, several cases have had to be

hospitalized in Intensive Care Units.

The detected cases correspond to middle-aged adults.

Although considered rare, people who receive botulinum toxin injections for cosmetic or therapeutic purposes can experience iatrogenic botulism if they are injected with too much.

The most common symptoms of this disease are weakness and difficulty swallowing or breathing, although ocular symptoms such as blurred vision or drooping eyelids, among others, can also occur in the case of aesthetic treatments.

The ECDC recommends that people who have traveled to Istanbul for such a cosmetic treatment who experience symptoms of botulism seek medical attention as soon as possible.
