• On board with the pilot Fátima Ginard: from "let's see if you park well" to "how proud, she's a girl"

  • Eva Laín, the Spanish woman who is about to revolutionize mining

Like any girl her age,

14,

when I interview her she is wearing a black Nike sweatshirt and long straight hair.

Like any girl her age, she is in the third year of ESO and on weekends she goes out with her friends, she watches movies with her family..., the normal thing.

Like any girl her age, she likes boys, fashion and makeup.

But Valeria Corrales is not another girl her age.

This woman from Huesca has been chosen by Forbes as

one of the protagonists of change in Spain

"For her ability to transform reality and lead civil society, with her vision and her work, towards a more promising future."

There is nothing.

But what does Valeria do to deserve such compliments?

She is the co-creator, along with Patricia Heredia, of

ValPat STEAM,

a YouTube channel with which they encourage young people, and girls in particular, to be interested in technology and science.

Programming, electronics, robotics and mathematics are the core of her videos, subjects that can be dry but, once passed through her sieve, even become fun.

Where does this excessive interest in technology come from? I started at the age of six, when my father gave me a doll that came with a lot of pieces, it was like Lego.

I had a great time doing those projects with my brother.

For example, a zip line in the living room through which the doll slid.

And then I started watching videos and tutorials that I found on YouTube.

I liked them, but the gentlemen who made them seemed super boring. A future full of options opens before you.

How do you see yourself in 10 years? I'll probably be an engineer, but of what... I don't know.

Sometimes I say bioengineering to help with medicine, but I change my mind a lot.

I will study Engineering for sure, although I still don't know what. There are very few women who end up leaning towards this type of science.

What do you think it's due to? I guess it's because they're afraid to try it.

I hope women and girls my age realize that technology is essential for everything, that it makes your life easier, they forget their fear and try it.

Before, more women studied Mathematics, when they normally went to be teachers.

Now the proportion has changed, because the outputs are different.

It seems that they are afraid of the power part, they like more the social or creative.

This is precisely what we try to teach with our videos, that technology can be creative and fun, that it has its human and social side.

We do projects to help solve certain things.

Forget fear and try it.

Valeria Corrales in an interview.

An adjective that defines mathematics. It's a lot of fun. And technology? It's also fun.

And it has no limits, with it you can do anything. And your friends, have you convinced them of it?

Can you drag them? When they enter my channel they tell me they like it.

I recommend that you watch it no matter how old you are, because it will surely help you. What are your favorite subjects? As I study online at a high school in the United States, I only have Mathematics, English, History and Chemistry.

And the ones I like the most are the first two. What is an ordinary day like for such a busy young woman? In the morning I make the videos, in the afternoon I attend class through video calls, then I play sports and work a little more in the channel. So that later they say that it cannot spread one day... Do you save space to manage social networks? I have them all,

Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Twitter, although I don't use this one.

I am with them for about an hour and a half or two a day on weekends, and on weekdays for about an hour. And your parents, what do they tell you?

They are very happy and proud.
