  • Germany Greta Thunberg: "Climate protection is not a crime"

Norwegian police briefly detained environmental activist

Greta Thunberg

during a demonstration in Oslo on Wednesday, according to several eyewitnesses.

Indigenous activists and other campaigners demanding the removal of wind turbines from reindeer pastures in Norway blocked access to several government buildings in recent days.

Thunberg and others who were blocking one of the gates of the

Norwegian Ministry of Finance

were evicted by police officers and taken out of the area while other protesters chanted slogans.

"This is an

international shame

that does not only affect Norway. There is a global fight for the rights of indigenous peoples all over the world. (...) We cannot fight climate change at the expense of the rights of indigenous peoples" , Thunberg has denounced, in statements to the Norwegian newspaper 'Aftenposten'.

Several government buildings in the capital have been the target of protests by activists, who denounce the presence of two wind farms, whose construction in the

Trondelag region

was carried out in detriment of the rights of the Sami community and their grazing areas, according to the Supreme Court.

The peaceful protests have been taking place since early Monday morning, with several evictions and with some activists chaining themselves.

The Government of Norway recommended the weekend to employees of various ministries to work from home and already this Monday they have issued a statement reminding the protesters that although they can "express themselves", the protests "cannot be carried out at the expense of the work of ministries or security".

In October 2021, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a lawsuit filed against two wind farms - one of them Storheia

,

the largest in Norway - in the

Fosen

district of Trondelag, considering that it put at risk reindeer herding and thereby infringing the right of the Sami community to exercise their traditions.

For this reason, they have requested that these two parks be dismantled and the region returned to its natural state.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Oil and Energy,

Terje Aasland

, has asked for more time so that the authorities can implement measures with which both realities can coexist.
