U.S. President Joseph Biden announced on February 23 that the U.S. side will nominate former MasterCard CEO Ajay Banga as the new president of the World Bank to succeed David O. Malpass.

Since the establishment of the World Bank, the president has always been a U.S. citizen and nominated by the U.S. side.

Analysts said that a major consideration in the US's selection of Banga was his Indian identity.

Banga, 63 years old, is an Indian-American. He is currently the vice chairman of the board of directors of the American General Atlantic Investment Group. He has more than 30 years of work experience in the business field. He is a director of companies such as Husband Foods and Dow.

Biden issued a statement saying that Banga has considerable experience in mobilizing public and private sector resources to promote solutions to "the most pressing challenges of today" such as climate change, and is "specially suited to lead the World Bank at this critical moment in history."
