Until now, it has been common to submit university graduation theses in book form, but now there is a growing movement to submit them online.

On the other hand, some students want to "leave it in a form" separately from submitting it to the school, and there is a movement to bind it independently.

thesis online

In the laboratory of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in Fuchu City, Tokyo, there are booklets such as graduation theses from about 50 years ago when they were still handwritten.

However, starting in the 2020 academic year, universities will require students to submit graduation theses and graduation research online.

According to the university, one of the reasons for this was the spread of the new coronavirus infection, so they stopped accepting face-to-face receptions at the desk of the Educational Affairs Division and turned it into data and submitted it online.

Professor Toru Aoyama, who teaches students majoring in Indonesian, said, "It's a pity that you can't get your hands on the book after it's bound, but I think it's a good thing for students because they don't have to worry about printer problems right before submission. It has become easier for teachers to communicate with students until just before submission."

Universities across the country are moving to convert their graduation theses into data and submit them online, such as Kobe University's Faculty of Business Administration, some faculties and departments at Sugiyama Jogakuen University in Aichi Prefecture, and even Toyo University's humanities department. It means that more than 80% of them have moved to online submission.

But I want to keep it in shape

Under these circumstances, it is said that the number of requests for binding books has decreased at the shops and businesses that have accepted the binding of graduation theses around the university.

When I asked bookbinders in Tokyo, they said, "Since the spread of the new coronavirus, the number of requests to bind graduation thesis has decreased considerably." I was.

On the other hand, even in such a situation, some students are ordering their own book binding, saying, "I want to leave the results of my study in a form" and "I want to give it to people who cooperated with my research."

I was able to read it while chewing

Yuto Okano, who studied Indonesian Balinese cuisine and culture in Professor Aoyama's seminar at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, is one of the people who bound the book himself, even though it was enough to submit the data.

The bound research is titled 'Bali Cuisine Research-Bali Cuisine Connected with Balinese Culture-', and summarizes the records of staying in Bali for a month and visiting more than 20 restaurants.

Among them, I went to the home of a local acquaintance and learned the process of making seasonings that are indispensable for Balinese cuisine, and I went to the square in front of the popular restaurant that is popular with the locals early in the morning and learned about the ingredients. It also describes the results of detailed observations from the preparation of Balinese cuisine to the completion of Balinese cuisine.

Mr. Okano said, ``When I held it in my hand, I was able to read it while thinking about the parts that I would have skipped if it were data.I want to learn more about Balinese cuisine and write a book in the future. I would be happy if I could pick up and compare both my current research and feel my own growth."

It is the trend of the times that things that used to be on paper are being replaced by data, but what is special to me is not just a single data file, but something tangible and something that can be touched. There also seems to be
