• Movistar will close Canal Toros, vital in the economic structure of bullfighting in the last decade

Movistar Plus has made the news announced by EL MUNDO official on Tuesday of last week and gives the punch to its bullfighting theme channel after 30 years.

The appearance of a competitor, OneToro, which has taken away the Madrid and Seville seasons, that is, the jewels in the crown of the San Isidro and April fairs, have led the Telefónica platform to throw in the towel.

Despite the fact that rumors arose on Friday of a possible reversal,

that they could have pulled the handbrake

and reconsidered the position -the press release had been delayed and kept in a drawer, until this Monday-, in the end it has been decided to end the dedication of a communication giant for bullfighting.

Some idea had been considered in the last few hours to reformulate the pay channel -even giving open content-, stuck in the same model and with a bleeding of subscribers, without any promotion in the other channels of the platform and detached from the name of Movistar: Bullfighting Channel.

But the idea of throwing down the street in the middle has weighed more.

This is the full text:

"TOROS, the channel dedicated entirely to bullfighting, will cease its broadcast on March 23, 2023.

The platform will continue to offer its customers (via VOD)

the extensive catalog of exclusive content for the sector

generated for more than thirty years: historic fairs, own production programs, interviews...

Movistar Plus+, formerly

CANAL+,

has spent more than three decades passionately promoting and supporting bullfighting in all its dimensions,

offering the best live fairs and festivities with productions of maximum quality

never seen before in a bullfighting celebration, generating the best additional content around the party and always by the best professionals.

A team that has made the exciting adventure of taking bullfighting to every corner a reality, vindicating it at decisive moments in which many windows were closing, providing greater visibility to the sector and, not least, incorporating publics and audiences that have discovered

bullfighting in all its grandeur and attractiveness thanks to this channel

.

And all this from a radical honesty and passion for this cultural legacy that is bullfighting.

After more than 30 years betting on bullfighting, the new market situation and the emergence of new players, unfortunately make the continuity of the channel that has been exclusively dedicated to the sector unfeasible.

As of March 23, the platform will stop issuing TOROS for all its customers, including those who have contracted it separately or integrated into their Movistar offer in Spain.

Residential customers will be able to continue enjoying on demand (VOD) through their decoder or on their devices the best bullfighting content that has been broadcast throughout the channel's history.

From the 'Programs' section you will be able to enjoy the great fairs, historical festivities and the best formats (documentaries, reports and interviews) that have enriched the TOROS programming: "Por las Rutas del Toro", "Desolladero", "Toro en la Piel", "Kikiriki", special programs with the great figures of bullfighting...

This measure will be communicated to all customers

affected soon and Movistar will not charge them the corresponding amount of the TOROS channel from March 1.

Movistar Plus+ wants to thank all the professionals in the sector, bullfighters, subordinates, ranchers, businessmen, attorneys, fans... all those who contributed to consolidating this wonderful project, their support in the crucial moments that we have lived together, especially the pandemic years.

Years in which this channel promoted

, counting on the generosity of all the parties involved, the so-called 'Reconstruction Tour', and allowed to keep alive the flame of bullfighting in a critical period for the celebration of festivities.

For all this,

thanks to all the people who have contributed to make this channel great

and, above all, to all the faithful subscribers who have lived their love for bullfighting with us".
