 Born into an ordinary family

Not rich, but 'parents didn't put pressure on me'

Reporter: You studied in a prestigious university for your undergraduate studies, and you don’t seem to be under great financial pressure now. Is it because your family conditions are very good?

Wanwan: My family is in the countryside, and my parents do very ordinary jobs.

But what my parents have always asked me is that health is more important, just find a happy thing to do.

They respected me and let me choose the job I want to do.

Chaochao: No, it’s just an ordinary worker’s family.

My mother was laid off earlier, and now she helps people look after the store; my father was also laid off, and is still looking for a job.

Although they are not very rich, they did not put financial pressure on me.

And I like to save money since I was in college, and I don’t have a strong material desire, and I don’t like to buy new clothes, luxury goods and cosmetics. I have savings.

 I found a few jobs that I didn't like

“I don’t think there is any shame in working in a hotpot restaurant”

Reporter: You majored in news communication for your undergraduate degree. Did you choose to do journalism after graduation?

Why does Wanwan only have 5,000 yuan in savings for 5 years of work, and Chaochao chooses to go to a hot pot restaurant? Can you share with us your journey along the way?

Wanwan: When I graduated in 2017, I chose to look for a job directly and voted for all the media in a certain city, but there was no news.

At that time, a real estate planning job offered me a basic salary of 120,000 yuan, as well as project commissions, food and housing, but I chose an advertising post in a major Internet company.

After I went there, I found that this job is very commercialized. When customers raise their needs, we will do relevant planning. Basically, we cannot control the content expression. I have worked for half a year and then resigned naked.

After that, I tried many short video companies.

When editing and directing short videos, I have more control over the content and can convey some values that I want to convey. For example, I have made videos on college students' employment issues and women's body anxiety, and the feedback has been very good.

Later, I found that I wanted to spread value, and the company wanted to realize business, and the contradictions could not be reconciled; and for a while, I often left work at two o'clock in the morning, lost more than ten pounds, and couldn't even bend my waist to tie my shoelaces. I went to the hospital to find out Two lumbar vertebrae protruded, and the doctor said it was irreversible, so I quit my job again.

Then I went to a company with Chaochao to work as a screenwriter for children's animation, but was later laid off due to industry reasons.

Some time ago, I wanted to go to the civil service exam after the postgraduate entrance examination, but this is not the way I like.

Chaochao: In a writing class during my undergraduate studies, the teacher showed us the movie "The Blue Door". For the first time, I knew that there was such a rich meaning behind the movie, and I was touched.

I prepared carefully for half a year, and my graduate student was successfully admitted to the film major of Communication University of China.

I like writing very much. At that time, I saw a social news about a barber shop forcing women into prostitution, so I created a script around this topic.

The teacher praised my script and pushed me the WeChat of the screenwriter of "Xiu Chun Knife". I added the screenwriter's WeChat like a dream and went to his studio to chat, but in the end he didn't accept my script.

Later, the scripts I wrote also received some recognition, but finding a job after graduation was not very smooth, so I worked as a screenwriter for children's animation. The working environment and salary were very good, and I was laid off due to policy reasons a year later.

Then I found a few jobs that I didn't like, so I went to a hot pot restaurant.

I don't think there is any shame in working in a hotpot restaurant, it's just a transitional stage in my life.

Calmly present "drive high and go low" to appease netizens

"Actually, most people are ordinary people"

Reporter: Why do you think the video "Me: Graduated for 5 years, deposit 5,000, She: Master of Chinese Communication, cleans the hot pot restaurant" became popular?

Who was moved by it?

Wan Wan: At that time, I didn't expect so many people to pay attention to it. I thought it would have 200,000 views at most.

The fact that we received so much attention may be due to the fact that the video was presented in a more comfortable state at the beginning. Many people said that we were warming up in the video, as if we were chatting with friends.

Second, it is true that this topic has resonated with many people.

Chaochao: We were actually a little surprised.

Perhaps what was seen on the Internet in the past was a small group of glamorous people. We face failure with a calm and happy attitude, which will make everyone feel that they can also take a breath and don't need to live under a standard system.

Reporter: After the video was released, what impressive responses did you receive?

Wanwan: Many netizens commented on us and received many private messages.

I was particularly impressed by one comment. He said, "Many people are keen to show off their successes. Thank you for sharing their failures." Another comment said: "A few people take their few successful experiences as a universal truth. , so that others can learn from it, but in fact most people are ordinary people." I was both moved and sad.

The success of a small number of people we see is actually just the top of the pyramid, and most people are still working hard to make a living.

Chaochao: The female teacher who recommended me to meet the screenwriter sent me a message some time ago, saying that she saw my video and hoped to have a chat when she had time.

I called her right away, and she gave me some advice on a screenwriting career, and I'm sorry I didn't take the opportunity.

She wants me to be more outgoing, not afraid to express myself, to take chances.

I was very touched and felt that she really cared about the students.

Reporter: After seeing the video, how did the parents react?

Wan Wan: After the video received attention, I had an in-depth communication with my family.

I showed my mother the video, and I said, I have always wanted to ask you a question, this year I am doomed to fail the postgraduate entrance examination, will you be disappointed in me?

My mother was very surprised, she said how could it be, she always wanted me to be healthy and happy, she didn't listen to what others said, she just thought it was not easy for me these years.

I was almost in tears.

Indeed, I have been a child of other people's family since I was a child, and I am their pride when I come out of the countryside.

When I asked if she would be disappointed in me, my mother said never, and I was very touched.

Chaochao: I didn’t want them to know about it through others, so I sent a long message to my parents, telling them what kind of video I made and about my unemployment experience. I kept it from them before.

I specifically mentioned the tempering of my work. I hope they will not take unemployment too seriously. I hope they can understand me. It’s okay if they don’t understand. They can say whatever they want.

Unexpectedly, my mother said "Come on, my mother supports you", and my father returned some expressions.

I don't know if they act relaxed in front of me, but they still worry behind their backs.

At present, the family as a whole does not put any pressure on me, and what is required of me is to be healthy and happy.

we are not idle

  We've actually been rushing forward

Reporter: There are voices saying that you have a very good academic background. In fact, there are many choices. You just choose a life of experience, constantly changing jobs, and even working in hot pot restaurants. What do you think?

Wan Wan: Actually, we are not pure experientialists. Many people may have misunderstood it, thinking that the two of us are both smiling and idle.

But it’s not. No matter whether I studied hard in high school, or I worked hard and looked for a job afterwards, I have always been in a state of rushing forward. I am also a person with very clear goals.

It's just that after we worked hard, we still failed, and after trying again and failing, we chose to accept ourselves and accept our ordinaryness.

The change of mentality is not to lie flat, but to continue to work harder.

Reporter: What are your future plans?

Wanwan: I have just arrived in Beijing, and I plan to find a job that can make some money. After all, I really don’t have any savings.

I no longer have high expectations for work as before, as long as I can have something related to my interests, and at the same time operate a personal account.

I am calm and accepting of myself now.

I no longer pursue a stable path. I accept that I am an ordinary person who works hard. I may experience many failures, but it doesn’t matter. If I can live my life in the way I like, then I am very, very lucky.

Chaochao: I hope to try to write more this year, and try to find some suitable writing jobs. I will also insist on free creation in my spare time. After a year, I will see if I can achieve an ideal state, and then make adjustments.
