"Righteous"

The painting by Sergei Ursulyak tells about the heroic deed of the Soviet political officer, who saved more than 200 Jews from death.

In 1942, Nikolai Kiselyov and five other partisans took 218 old people, women and children to the front line from the occupied territory of Belarus - the Dolginovsky ghetto.

In 2005, in Israel, Kiselyov was awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations.

The script was written by Gennady Ostrovsky based on archival records and eyewitness accounts.

He was also inspired by the documentary Kiselyov's List.

While working on the painting, its authors traveled to the Holocaust Museum in Minsk and to the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Complex Yad Vashem.

About 400 actors were involved in the mass scenes.

It was important for the director that the shooting took place where real events unfolded, so the team worked in Belarus, Russia and Israel.

However, the production designer Yevgeny Kachanov had to come up with a ghetto, since almost no documentary photographs survived.

The film is in theaters from February 16th.
