• 'The blue lotus' Tintin reaches a new world record shrouded in controversy

  • Tintin, from China to the clouds A drawing for 3 million euros

The auction of the original drawing that was used for the cover of the color edition of the comic "Tintin in America" could surpass the record

of 3.1 million euros

for a work by Hergé next Friday, according to the French auction house Artcurial .

This drawing is part of the sale of a set of

104 batches of drawings, vignettes and figures

of Tintin and his adventure companions, as well as letters from the author himself.

The star of the auction is "the cover of the 'great images of Tintin' edition and it is the

first time that a cover has been made in large format and in color

", explains Saveria de Valence, an Artcurial specialist, to EFE.

The drawing, measuring

52 by 36 centimeters and dating from 1942

, was later used in the first color edition of Tintin in America and, 80 years later, continues to be used for current prints.

Drawn in

Chinese ink and blue pencil,

the piece is in excellent condition and the auction house estimates a price of between 2.2 and 3.2 million euros, which could exceed the sale price of the original drawing on the cover. of 'The Blue Lotus', another of Tintin's adventures, also auctioned at Artcurial and which reached 3.1 million euros in January 2021, setting a world record in the comics sector.

Hergé "is the first author to truly understand that the comic was something that

could convey stories

, but also the entire culture of a country," says De Valence, who defines Tintin as "the first truly international comic book reporter."

It will be the third time that this cover has gone on sale in Articurial, which already sold

a small edition in 2008

for 764,218 euros, and later auctioned in 2012 for 1.3 million euros.

Among other objects and works, Friday's auction also includes a small color edition of 'Tintin in America', from 1932, valued
