Composer, artist and producer Burt Bacharach is considered one of the most influential songwriters of the 20th century.

His songs have been recorded by over a thousand different artists and he has been awarded six American Grammys, Oscars and the Polar Prize (2001).

Wrote big hits

Burt Bacharach stood with one foot in pop and the other in jazz.

The strong melodies were his signature.

Among the most famous songs are "I Say a Little Prayer For You", "Walk on by" and "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head".

The lyrics were mostly written by his partner Hal David.

Popular among the stars

His songs have been sung by artists such as Elton John, Dionne Warwick (Bacharach's own favorite singer), and Stevie Wonder.

But the list can be made miles long: even Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, Elvis Presley and The Beatles have interpreted his music.

In Sweden, Siw Malmkvist, Lill Lindfors, Monica Zetterlund and Rigmor Gustafsson have sung Swedish translations.

Burt Bacharach was born in 1928 in Kansas in the USA.

He died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, his spokeswoman Tina Brausam told the AP.
