It is middle veteran Christer Björkman who is behind the concept of the American song contest, together with Peter Settman, Anders Lenhoff and Ola Melzig.

The project is depicted in the documentary "American song contest - when the Swedes took Eurovision to the USA" which is available on SVT Play.

The structure consists of five heats, two semi-finals and a final.

Viewership figures for the final show aren't in yet, but the competition has lost more than a million viewers since the first episode aired.

The competition has thus far received a lukewarm reception from the American television audience.

The first part of the competition on March 28, the program had almost 2.9 million viewers.

Since then, viewers have dropped off, with a low of just over 1.4 million viewers during the first semi-final.

By the second semi-final on May 2, the number of viewers had increased slightly to 1.6 million, according to the site TV series finale.

- You work a bit uphill.

You compete against other big concepts that already exist, for example American Idol.

Since then it has been a bit difficult to keep up with the voting actually, you have had three days to vote via phone or tiktok.

When the program is broadcast, you have not been told who will go on to the final, says music journalist Bella Qvist.

As a comparison, you can look at the Swedish Melodifestivalen, where the final had just over 3.2 million viewers.

The final of the American song contest can be seen on SVT Play from Wednesday.
