In a new documentary, producer Charlotte Bhatt has followed the artist duo Hooja for just over four months with the goal of portraying the success story from Gällivare.

In one year, Hooja and Dj Mårdhund have gone from being two friends who make music for fun at home to performing in front of thousands and winning P3 Gold.

But is it really possible to get up close and personal with the masked duo?

And where is the line between slapstick and seriousness?

- It feels like you get close to them anyway, even though they have the masks because they are such genuine people, says producer Charlotte Bhatt to SVT and adds:

- I also think many times that they themselves are like this: what am I and what is my character - because they go together so much.

"Scramble something from the closet"

In the documentary, Hooja says that they decided to be masked in connection with the first hit "Donkey Kong" being posted online, but the choice of clothing, which is now a kind of uniform for the duo, was more of a coincidence.

- If we do it: then gather something from your wardrobe, because you don't want to show the novelty like that, says DJ Mårdhund in the documentary and Hooja goes on to say:

- So I took what I had in the wardrobe, and this is how it happened.

Humorous texts with recognition

Hooja's songs are described as simple, melodic and with a catchy hook.

Combining that with lyrics with a high recognition factor, Charlotte Bhatt believes is the secret behind the duo's success:

- Then I also think it's because they have always been very popular and always pretended to be who they are: ordinary people like you and me.

For Hooja himself, it has meant a lot to be able to spread his culture to other parts of the country.

- Our texts are humorous and there is a lot of recognition factor in them.

From the beginning it was just us and the people who live up here saying this stuff.

It feels so cool to now be able to spread these words and the ones we say to people down south.

It's like we're teaching them new words, says Hooja in the documentary.

"Hooja - the movie" can be seen on SVT Play.
