Inter-provincial population inflow plays an important role in driving growth

Yang Fan, a researcher at the Population and Development Research Center of Renmin University of China and head of the Department of Demography, introduced to Chinanews.com that in the concept of demography, there are three factors that cause changes in the total population, birth, death and migration.

Among them, natural growth refers to the increase caused by the excess of births over death, and mechanical growth refers to the growth caused by migration.

Judging from these provinces that have achieved total population growth, the natural population growth rate of Guizhou is 3.71‰, that of Qinghai is 3.37‰, that of Jiangxi is only 0.25‰, and that of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The natural growth rate is 1.43‰.

The natural population growth rates of Gansu and Chongqing were -0.04‰ and -2.11‰ respectively, both negative.

"Some of these provinces have a very low natural growth rate, and some have a negative natural growth rate, that is, the net population inflow (the inflow of foreign population minus the population outflow) is positive, so that the total population of this region presents a positive trend. growth trend.” Yang Fan said that this means that inter-provincial population inflows have played an important role in driving the growth of the local permanent population.

She said that overall, the country is still in a state of negative growth, and these regions are almost in the range of zero growth.

Therefore, she believes that "the positive growth in these places is not going against the trend for the time being."

The population growth after the optimization of the epidemic prevention and control policy remains to be seen

In terms of regional distribution, these provinces with population growth are all located in the central and western regions.

In this regard, Peng Peng, executive director of the Guangdong Provincial Restructuring Research Association, explained in an interview with the media that, on the one hand, the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta along the coast were affected by the epidemic last year, and some people returned to their hometowns.

In addition, with the rise of central cities in the Midwest, some people have accumulated experience in the coastal areas and returned to their hometowns to start businesses.

Taking Jiangxi Province as an example, based on the natural population growth rate of 0.25‰ last year, the natural population growth of this region is about 11,300.

This means that Jiangxi added 94,500 new inflows in terms of population mechanical growth last year.

Ma Zhihui, director of the Economics Institute of the Jiangxi Academy of Social Sciences, once analyzed in a media report that in recent years, Jiangxi’s economic growth rate has been relatively fast, and the growth rate ranks among the top in the country. An important reason is that Jiangxi has increased its efforts to undertake industrial transfers from the east. .

Jiangxi's strategic emerging industries have developed rapidly in recent years, and their proportions in GDP have increased significantly.

At the same time, with the rapid economic development and the impact of the epidemic in recent years, many migrants have returned to their hometowns to start businesses or work nearby.

Yang Fan also said that a large part of the reason for population migration is the economy. With the optimization of epidemic prevention and control policies, these people may return to places with more employment opportunities, higher income levels, and higher economic development levels.
