The new Indian film "Paattan", in which the star Shahrukh Khan plays the main role, broke records at the Indian box office after its release last week, reviving the Bollywood industry that has recently suffered poor results.

"Paatan", directed by Siddharth Anand, achieved the highest grossing ever for an Indian film in the first and second days of its showing in India.

Analyst Taran Adarsh said on Twitter on Sunday that the film grossed 2.5 billion rupees ($30 million) in its first five days in cinemas.

Audiences were anticipating the release of "Paattan", the first film starring Shah Rukh Khan in four years.

Shah Rukh Khan, 57, who is dubbed "King Khan" and "Badshah" by his fans across India, stars alongside Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.

Hindi-language Bollywood films have struggled since cinemas reopened after the pandemic.

"The unprecedented success of 'Pattan' is an important indicator of the direction the Indian film industry is heading," said Akshay Rati, owner of the network of cinemas.

He added, "There is a return to the old school, which is based on cinema in theaters as a societal experience," noting that cinemas rely on Indian films.
