Brendan Fraser doesn't want to look like he did as Rick O'Connell in the Mummy movies anymore.

In an interview with the British newspaper "The Telegraph", the 54-year-old spoke about the course of his career and the extent to which he had to conform to a certain appearance as a young man.

The actor, who was in his early 30s at the time, was considered Hollywood's beau for his muscular build and attractive face.

"It makes sense that I had to look like this when all they gave me to wear was basically a loincloth."

Fraser played the handsome adventurer Rick O'Connell in three films: The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

He had previously been cast as a similar guy: in the 1997 film George, he played a scantily clad man who grew up among animals.

Retirement from Hollywood

The actor withdrew from the spotlight after allegedly being groped at a film industry luncheon in 2002.

Speaking of the alleged incident, he said: "I knew from that point in my life that I had to retire.

And that's what I did." He added, "I'm older now, I don't look the same anymore - and I don't really want to anymore."

Rather, he has "made his peace with" who he is now.

"I'm glad that the work I can do is based on an emotional reality that, while different from my own life, I can relate to strongly."

To embody his final role as a severely overweight man named Charlie in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale, Fraser wore prosthetic limbs weighing over 300 pounds.

The depiction sparked a debate in the United States about whether such so-called "fatsuits" should be worn in the film business.

Fraser responded to the critics: "I knew that this portrayal had to be sensitive and honest.

Putting Charlie in quotes — glorifying him or making him a circus act — isn't something I wanted to be a part of.” Fraser was recently nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his comeback role in The Whale.
