"I have no words to explain what I have seen.

It is outrageous, it is a scandal, it is a shame

. I wonder what has to happen for us to realize that this cannot continue.

Our elders do not deserve this treatment, or rather , mistreatment

."

With this reflection, the investigation of Alberto Chicote and the Hablando en plata

team about the "scandal" of the residences in Spain

ended last night .

Four years ago, the chef already turned red in the face of many and shook society in

Are you going to eat it?

.

On that occasion, Chicote, after receiving dozens of emails from relatives and residents, went to various residences and showed the horror experienced by those we should most care for, respect and thank: the elderly.

That program seemed to stir up or at least provoked such outrage that it gave hope.

Last night, in

Hablando claro: the scandal of the residences,

it became clear that neither after the pandemic (and what it meant for the elderly), nor after that program, nor after the complaints that arose, was it useless.

What was seen last night, what was heard -

"they asked you to kill them" -, as

Chicote

repeated well

during the report and later, in the special conducted by

Sonsoles Ónega

, is "shocking".

From a television point of view, what Alberto Chicote has done in the hands of Antena 3 stirs the stomach and the soul of anyone - except, it seems, those who take advantage of and "mistreat" the elderly -, and it is necessary.

It is necessary that it be shown, that it be denounced and that it be broadcast in

prime time

, that the more people see it, the better.

It is incredible that in a society what is happening in many residences occurs: malnutrition, lack of food, abandonment, threats, abuse in its purest form.

The "silent extermination"

Elderly people who feed menus valued at 3.5 euros

- who eats for 3.5 euros?-;

elderly who do not speak for fear of reprisals that they may suffer in what is their home, in the place where they have to care for and attend to them;

elderly -like the woman in the image- to those who get up at 5 in the morning to advance the work of the morning shift and to those who give a bowl with a spoonful of cocoa and three cookies that they have to eat sitting on the bed without even a sad table to support the plate;

elderly people who pay 50 euros a day to live in a residence and who hide in a laundry

for hours so that the inspector does not see that the quota of residents is not being met;

elderly who in a year as residents have lost more than 10 kilos... Add and continue.

A

"silent extermination"

was the adjective used in the report by Esther Pascual, coordinator of Relatives and Users of Residences of the Valencian Community (ReCoVa).

Words, along with many others, of those who fight to end this situation and of those who suffer it in their own flesh

- "prison without bars", "moridero", "circus of horrors" -

that shook not only Chicote but all of the one with a little soul.

Why, if four years ago and with the tragedy that was experienced in the residences with the Covid, this terrible situation was already visible, nobody has done anything?

That is the big question, which today remains unanswered.

Chicote

said

this Wednesday during his visit to

El Hormiguero

that society sees newborns as the human beings who need the most protection and care, but the reality is that those who need the most protection are our elders.

During last night's report, where

Chicote

visits public, private and concerted residences in several Autonomous Communities, those who had the courage to show their faces and denounce what they are suffering are 'the privileged' because they are the ones who fend for themselves, those who have their cognitive capacities at full capacity,

imagine those who can neither fend for themselves nor do they know what they are doing to them

.

I doubt very much that there is greater fear.

As it did four years ago, Chicote's report is supported by everything that can be supported so that later there is no one who says 'it is manipulated'.

In addition to the testimonies of the elderly who live in the residences that were shown in the program, Chicote requested through the transparency portal the inspections of all the residences of each Autonomous Community

-there are 5,300 residences in Spain-

, only eight responded.

Castilla y León was the Autonomous Community that sent the most data

.

And that's when Chicote realizes that one of the residences, located in a town in Soria, has received several inspections in one year and has received

sanctions worth 108,000 euros

for

"dispensing vexatious treatment, falsifying documents, not having care personnel and limiting the rights of its residents"

.

We all know

Chicote

.

The chef, as he always does in his programs, does not just stick with what they tell him or what is documented.

Chicote

calls the residence and poses as a son who is looking for a residence for his parents.

During the telephone conversation with the director of the center and at the start he demonstrates the value given to our elderly:

"Right now we do not have places, but I have three admitted and the admitted, well I don't know"

.

In the entire conversation where

Chicote

asks about the price (1,190 euros "VAT included"), about the food ("own kitchen and everything with local products", about the inspections ("we have never had any problems"), even

Chicote

He talks to two relatives who had his mother there and they show him the type of food they gave him:

a sardine for dinner, half a boiled egg and a slice of mortadella...

It is of all the residences that appeared last night in the report, the only one in which the owner agrees to meet with

Chicote

, yes with his legal assistant present.

And I don't know what was worse if what the inspection said, if what the relatives reported or the outrageous way of justifying the owner: "The humiliating treatment was because a resident went to the hospital for ulcers and in the emergency room they consider that the ulcers respond to a longer episode. The inspection verifies this and concludes that the nursing staff had fallen short due to Covid. There were 68 users and the Junta de Castilla y León required a minimum of 8 hours of ATS.

The fact is that if you recognize the sanction and make prompt payment, they discount you 40% and the Board of Directors decided to pay the fines

".

"It seems that we have killed half a residence," said the owner to make matters worse.

"Well, if I tell you the truth, yes," Chicote replied, ending the conversation and "outraged" at the attitude of the owner of the

residence Odón Alonso

:

"It seems that they are talking about traffic fines

. "

Why is a sanctioned residence not closed?

All residences are governed by the regulations of each Autonomous Community

.

It is the CCAAs that are in charge of control, inspections, and ensuring the care of these elderly people

.

Of all the requests that

Chicote

made to be able to speak with one of these inspectors, in the first one the person in charge of making the recommendations for the menus for residences in the Valencian Community and the general secretary of the Department of Social Policy of the Xunta de Galicia.

The first was not even responsible for anything - "whoever has to be here has slipped the buck and charged it to you,"

Chicote

told him -;

the second, who treated

Chicote

Six weeks after the request, he held on tight to the inspections since "he was very concerned" about the circus of horrors that Chicote was showing him.

In Spain there are 200 inspectors to be in charge of monitoring the almost 5,300 residences.

Impossible to arrive with those resources that the CCAAs do not increase.

but, and when they arrive?

Why residences that have been sanctioned are still open?

Why isn't the residence that hid the elderly in a small room so they wouldn't get caught?

Why is everything solved with sanctions, but afterwards there is no follow-up?

Why, why and why.

On September 16,

Mariano Turégano García

, went to the municipal plenary session of the San Sebastián de los Reyes City Council to denounce forcefully and with a broken voice the situation that he and his "140 companions" live in the privately managed public residence of

Moscatelares

in

San Sebastian de los Reyes

.

His speech not only went viral, but it perfectly described what is happening in many residences, not in all, but in many.

"We were not born 80 years old, we have worked a lot and they should know it because today they enjoy privileges that we generate, not for us but for you. That cannot be achieved by looking the other way.

It is unusual that we are here asking to live with dignity

and do not tell us stories of competitions and get to work twisting the will of those who have the responsibility and try to evade it", he said among many other things then.

Last night

Chicote

went to speak with him and with several of his companions at the gates of the residence.

More than four months have passed since Mariano's moving and powerful speech.

Nothing has changed

.

Lack of attention, bad food, lack of dignity.

During the debate after the

Chicote

report where

Sonsoles Ónega

had active social workers, directors and characters such as

Charo Reina

or the actor

Octavi Pujades

, there were doubts as to whether the report on Hablando en plata: el escándalo de las residencias was common or it had been necessary to search and search to find residences where the horrors that were shown occurred.

Chicote

cleared up any doubt.

Since the first one was broadcast in 2018,

the chef has not stopped receiving complaints about the mistreatment that the elderly receive in many residences

.

You haven't had to dig around, you haven't had to lift layers and layers to find residences that do this.

No, thank God, it's not common, but it happens, and just having it happen to one is already despicable.

They are our grandparents, our parents, the people who fought so that today we live better than they lived and they are "forgotten"

.

In a Spain with a predominantly elderly population, this should not happen.

You have to value, you have to attend and you have to give them the place they deserve, and that begins by showing what he showed last night

Speaking in silver: the scandal of the residences

.

Shame and disgust, but necessary.

What is not seen does not exist, what does not concern us, is forgotten.

But it concerns us, because today it is them, but in a few years it could be us.

I prefer the phrase of a former worker from one of the residences that

Chicote

showed : "They do not deserve that because it is not worthy that grandparents are treated in this way and have the elderly like this."

No one deserves it, but them in any way.
