Colon hydrotherapy, also called colonic irrigation, is a technique for washing part of the large intestine.

The promise of this technique, which would be very old, would be to "purify" the body, by injecting water through a pipe inserted into the anus.

Another pipe allows the evacuation of stools and mucus.

In “Butterfly Minute!

“, Lina Fourneau, journalist at

20 Minutes

, investigated this fashionable practice, which is not regulated.

She returns in this podcast to the conclusions of her investigation.

Promise of well-being but unproven benefits

In this interview, the journalist first reviews the promise of this practice, and the method used to inject water into this part of the large intestine.

Then on the results of this colon hydrotherapy, while the benefits of the technique have been little or not proven by published scientific studies.

Worse, colon hydrotherapy can cause inconvenience, even health risks, warn doctors from the No FakeMed association, joined by the French mission fighting against sectarian aberrations, Miviludes.

This mission of vigilance against sectarian aberrations also reminds us that there are many sectoral organizations and movements in the field of nutrition, thought of as a form of alternative for health.

“The quest for purity or well-being, recurrent in the sectarian movement, is often used as a means of attracting new followers.

This quest requires in certain groups and through unconventional methods for therapeutic purposes, the implementation of detoxification practices combining physical exercise, frugality or even fasting, ”underlines Miviludes.

Rare but real health risks

So many practices, sometimes extreme, which, associated with sectarian discourse, “have revealed their formidable effectiveness in the process of mental influence”.

In the most dramatic cases, followers committed suicide, and sick people died prematurely, by refusal of proven medical care.

Finally, remember that Miviludes warns: since the health crisis, a myriad of "gurus 2.0", various "coaches", has been developing in the sphere of alternative health.

The mission is alarmed by the harmful influence of people like Thierry Casasnovas, Tal Schaller or Jean-Jacques Crèvecœur.
