At a press conference, Schleswig-Holstein's Minister of the Interior, Sabine Sütterlin-Waack (CDU), together with representatives of the police and judiciary, reported on the latest developments after a knife attack in a regional train with two dead.

Her thoughts are with the victims and their relatives, said Sütterlin-Waack at the beginning.

Something very terrible happened.

They ask that no room be given to assumptions and speculation.

Due to the very dynamic course of the day, a lot is still unclear.

She also wanted to "expressly say that the crimes are still too recent and the knowledge is not sufficient to draw political conclusions and make demands." Sütterlin-Waack assured that she would do "everything necessary" to clear up the crime.

According to the information, a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old from the region were killed.

"The two knew each other," says Sütterlin-Waack.

The relatives were informed that, out of consideration for them, they could not confirm any more details.

Two other people were critically injured, three others seriously.

Three people are currently in the hospital.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has announced that she will be in Brokstedt in the afternoon.

Perpetrators probably overpowered on the train

The perpetrator was slightly injured during the arrest, said Sütterlin-Waack.

He has been treated and is currently in police custody.

There are no results of an interrogation yet, and nothing can be said about motives.

He should be brought before the magistrate later today.

After hearing 24 witnesses so far, it is assumed that the perpetrator was overpowered on the train.

It has not yet been clarified where his injuries came from.

“The train was then secured.

Traces of blood were secured in four wagons.”

The perpetrator, Ibrahim A., "is a 33-year-old stateless Palestinian."

From which country Ibrahim A. entered the country in 2014 could not be answered on Thursday.

However, he was registered in Kiel from July to November 2021, which is why he is listed with the immigration office in Kiel.

In Schleswig-Holstein there are no police criminal files on A., but two reports: "one because of a dispute, one because of shoplifting".

Ibrahim A. entered the country in 2014 and has “criminalized several times in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hamburg since 2015, including violent crimes”.

He was last released from custody in connection with a dangerous physical injury in Billwerder on January 19.

It was the first case of imprisonment, and the prison sentence imposed expired while he was in custody.

According to the public prosecutor's office, Ibrahim was not considered an intensive offender.

The 33-year-old had three previous convictions, said Itzehoe's chief public prosecutor, Carsten Ohlrogge, on Thursday in Kiel.

In the morning, A. turned to the “Infopoint” in Kiel

Ibrahim A. also lived in a refugee accommodation in Kiel from July 2021 to November 30, 2021 and was banned there, among other things because of "harassment towards fellow residents".

After that he appeared in the central counseling center for homeless men, the last contact in Kiel took place in January 2022.
