Allowing the consumption of house crickets and worm larvae within the European Union

House crickets and cutworm larvae are to be allowed as food within the European Union under new regulations.

Starting today, it is possible to use frozen, dried or powdered crickets. As for the scale worm larvae, it will be allowed to be used in food starting the day after tomorrow.

It should be noted that similar rules already apply to migratory locusts and yellowworm larvae.

The European Commission is currently considering eight additional applications for a food licence, with manufacturers having to apply for permission for each insect they want to put on the market.

In the European Union, food containing insects must bear an indication of this, including the name of the insect species.

According to the European Commission's assessment, house crickets and cutworm larvae are safe for human consumption, but may pose a risk to people with food allergies.

Insects are rich in protein and are part of the common food in many countries.
